AI Overviews

Google's AI-generated summaries above traditional search results.

Industry Term

Full explanation

AI Overviews are Google's AI-generated summaries that appear above traditional search results for some queries, drawing on and citing a range of web sources.

They do not appear on every query. Google generates them selectively, more often for informational questions than for narrow navigational or transactional ones, and the trigger conditions change as the product evolves. A brand can rank well organically and still not see an AI Overview appear for a given search at all.

Because AI Overviews draw from the same underlying index as regular search results, the groundwork that earns strong organic rankings, clear structure, accurate and well-supported claims, technical crawlability, is largely the same groundwork that earns inclusion in the summary. It is an additional layer on top of search fundamentals, not a replacement for them.

Why this matters

It is where most people first met AI-mediated discovery, and it sits on top of the same index as ordinary search, which is why search fundamentals still matter.

Example

Search a question and see a shaded summary box above the usual blue links, with small numbered citations linking out to a handful of sources. That box is an AI Overview, generated from some of the same pages that would otherwise have ranked below it.

Where this sits

AI Overviews belongs to AI-Mediated Discovery, one of the seven layers of the Aingworth Glossary. The larger shift Aingworth is talking about, covering Google AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and whatever comes after them, without depending on any one platform's name.
