AI Search
Search experiences that generate an answer rather than a list of links.
Industry Term
Full explanation
AI search describes search experiences, such as Google AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT search, or Perplexity, that generate a synthesized answer instead of, or alongside, a list of links.
The common thread across these products is the output, not the underlying technology: instead of a ranked list a person scans and clicks through, the interface does the reading and hands back a written or spoken answer, sometimes with sources attached, sometimes without.
Because "AI search" describes what the interface looks like rather than what changed underneath it, treating it as the strategy tends to produce interface-chasing: optimizing for whichever product is newest. Aingworth's frameworks are built around the underlying shift, that something now interprets before the buyer sees anything, so they hold as the specific interfaces keep changing.
Why this matters
It is the most common label people use for the change, which makes it useful shorthand. It describes the interface rather than the underlying shift, so it is a starting point rather than a strategy.
Example
Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT search, and Perplexity all count as AI search, even though they are built differently and behave differently. The common feature a brand has to plan for is that each one can generate an answer without ever showing the person a list of links to click through.
Where this sits
AI Search belongs to AI-Mediated Discovery, one of the seven layers of the Aingworth Glossary. The larger shift Aingworth is talking about, covering Google AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and whatever comes after them, without depending on any one platform's name.
