Answer Engine
A system built to return a direct answer rather than a ranked list.
Industry Term
Full explanation
An answer engine is a search or AI system built to return a direct answer to a question rather than a ranked list of pages for the user to evaluate themselves.
This is the structural difference from a traditional search engine. A search engine's product is the list; ranking tenth is a worse outcome than ranking first, but it is still a visible outcome. An answer engine's product is the answer itself, and there is usually no equivalent of a second page the buyer will scroll to if a brand does not make the cut.
That all-or-nothing quality is what makes Answer Engine Optimization a different discipline from traditional SEO, even where the underlying groundwork — clear structure, accurate facts, machine-readable content — overlaps heavily with what already made a page rank well.
Why this matters
Ranked lists let a buyer compare. Answers do not. When the interface returns one response, being absent from it is closer to not existing than to ranking low.
Example
A traditional search engine might return a brand at position four for a query, still visible to anyone willing to scroll. An answer engine returns one paragraph; if that brand is not part of what it drew on, there is no position four to be found at.
Where this sits
Answer Engine belongs to AI-Mediated Discovery, one of the seven layers of the Aingworth Glossary. The larger shift Aingworth is talking about, covering Google AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and whatever comes after them, without depending on any one platform's name.
