Search Engine Optimization (SEO)

Improving a site so search engines can index, understand, and rank it.

Industry Term

Full explanation

Search Engine Optimization, or SEO, is the practice of improving a website so that traditional search engines can index, understand, and rank it. It remains the technical foundation that generative and answer engines build on.

Core SEO practice covers technical health, crawlability, site speed, mobile usability, clean site structure, alongside content quality and the external signals, like links and mentions, that indicate a site is trusted. These fundamentals determine whether a page is even indexed before any question of ranking or citation arises.

Generative and answer engines are frequently built on top of, or informed by, the same underlying search indexes as traditional search. A site with poor technical SEO is not just ranking worse in classic search results; it may be structurally excluded from the retrieval step that AI-generated answers depend on.

Why this matters

AI features sit on top of the same index as ordinary search. A page that cannot be crawled or understood is not eligible for either, which is why the fundamentals have not gone away.

Example

A site with broken internal links and slow page load times may never get fully indexed. Even flawless content on that site is invisible to both traditional search rankings and any AI system retrieving from the same index.

Where this sits

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) belongs to Search, SEO & Generative Optimization, one of the seven layers of the Aingworth Glossary. The established disciplines brands use to improve discoverability. Useful, and often necessary, but tactics that sit on top of a brand's underlying authority infrastructure rather than replace it.
