Answer Eligibility
Whether a source is even in the running to be used in an answer.
Industry Term
Full explanation
Answer eligibility describes whether a source contains information that is relevant, accessible, and clear enough to be considered for inclusion in an AI-generated answer. A brand cannot be recognized if it cannot first be retrieved.
It is a gate, not a score. A page either clears the bar of being crawlable, parseable, and clearly about the topic in question, or it does not, and a page that fails on any of those counts is out of consideration before questions of authority, trust, or reputation ever come into play.
The checks are mostly technical and structural, not persuasive: is the page blocked by robots.txt, does it load without requiring interaction a crawler cannot perform, is the key claim stated in plain, extractable text rather than buried in an image or behind a login. None of it makes a system prefer a brand; it only determines whether the brand is in the running at all.
Why this matters
It is the floor beneath everything else. Authority work has no effect on a page a system cannot reach, read, or make sense of.
Example
A page with the exact answer to a common buyer question, written clearly, gets no benefit from that if the page is blocked by robots.txt or the information only renders after a click a crawler will not make. It fails answer eligibility before its content quality is ever assessed.
Where this sits
Answer Eligibility belongs to AI-Mediated Discovery, one of the seven layers of the Aingworth Glossary. The larger shift Aingworth is talking about, covering Google AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and whatever comes after them, without depending on any one platform's name.
