Generative Engine Optimization (GEO)
Optimizing content for representation in generative AI environments.
Industry Term
Full explanation
Generative Engine Optimization, or GEO, refers to practices intended to improve how a brand is represented within generative AI and answer-engine environments. GEO can be a useful tactical discipline, but sustainable recognition depends on the authority infrastructure behind the content, not only on optimizing it for an AI interface.
Why this matters
GEO describes a set of tactics, not a position. Treating it as the whole strategy leaves a brand optimizing content for an interface while the authority underneath it stays thin.
Where this sits
Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) belongs to Search, SEO & Generative Optimization, one of the seven layers of the Aingworth Glossary. The established disciplines brands use to improve discoverability. Useful, and often necessary, but tactics that sit on top of a brand's underlying authority infrastructure rather than replace it.
