AI Visibility

How often and where a brand appears in AI-generated answers.

Industry Term

Full explanation

AI visibility describes how often and where a brand appears within AI-generated responses to relevant questions. It is a useful, observable outcome, but visibility alone does not show whether an AI system understands, trusts, or recommends a brand correctly.

It is usually the first thing anyone checks, because it is the easiest to observe: ask a system a handful of questions and see whether a brand's name comes up. That simplicity is also its limit — it answers only whether the name appears, not whether what is said about it is true, whether it is the credited source, or whether a person would act on it.

Aingworth's word standard treats visibility as an input and an outcome, never the goal. The goal is recognition, which includes whether the brand is described accurately and consistently, not just whether it is mentioned at all.

Why this matters

Visibility is necessary but not sufficient. A brand can appear frequently in AI answers and still be described incorrectly, which is why Aingworth treats it as one signal of recognition rather than the goal.

Example

Run the same ten questions about a category through an AI system. If a brand's name appears in six of the ten answers, that is its AI visibility for that set of questions — a starting measurement, not a verdict on whether the brand is being represented well.

Where this sits

AI Visibility belongs to AI-Mediated Discovery, one of the seven layers of the Aingworth Glossary. The larger shift Aingworth is talking about, covering Google AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and whatever comes after them, without depending on any one platform's name.
