Authority Method

The five-stage process: Diagnose, Define, Build, Distribute, Refine.

Aingworth Framework

Full explanation

The Authority Method is the five-stage process for building brand authority that AI systems cite: Diagnose, Define, Build, Distribute, Refine.

Each stage does a distinct job: Diagnose establishes where a brand currently stands, using something like the Recognition Diagnostic; Define fixes the plain, unambiguous account of who the brand is; Build produces the actual evidence, content, data, structured markup; Distribute earns the third-party corroboration that turns first-party content into verified authority; Refine measures what changed and feeds that back into the next cycle.

It is deliberately a loop, not a linear project with an end date. Because Authority Decay sets in the moment publishing stops, the fifth stage, Refine, exists specifically to reopen the first stage rather than close the process out, which is what keeps the method durable rather than a one-off campaign.

Why this matters

The Recognition Triangle describes the conditions. The Authority Method is how they get met. It is a cycle rather than a checklist, because authority decays if the loop stops.

Example

A brand runs the Diagnose stage and finds its Clarity condition is weak: it is described inconsistently across its own site and third-party listings. Define fixes the single, plain account of what the brand does; Build and Distribute turn that into published, corroborated content; Refine checks whether the inconsistency actually closed, and the cycle starts again on whichever condition is weakest next.

Where this sits

Authority Method belongs to Recognition & Authority, one of the seven layers of the Aingworth Glossary. What Aingworth believes. Recognition is the outcome; authority is the evidence that makes it possible. These are the terms that belong to Aingworth, most of them first set out in Become the Answer.
