Brand Mention

Any instance of a brand being named or referenced.

Industry Term

Full explanation

A brand mention is any instance where a brand is named or referenced, in an AI-generated response, an article, a review, or another source, whether or not it includes a link.

This matters more in AI search than it did in search-engine SEO specifically because of how the underlying systems work. Search engines valued links because a link was the crawlable, countable signal of endorsement. Language models are trained on and retrieve from text itself, so an unlinked mention in a well-regarded publication can still shape how a model describes a brand, even though it generates no referral traffic and no backlink.

In practice, tracking brand mentions means watching how often a brand's name appears across the sources a model is likely to draw from — news coverage, review sites, forums, its own site — and checking the accuracy of the surrounding context, since a mention can entrench a wrong fact just as easily as a correct one.

Why this matters

Mentions count now in a way they did not when links were the only currency. An unlinked reference still contributes to the record a system draws on.

Example

A brand named in a trade-press article with no link back to its site still counts as a brand mention — and if that article ranks well and gets crawled, it can shape how a model describes the brand even though it sent the brand zero visitors.

Where this sits

Brand Mention belongs to Measurement & AI Visibility, one of the seven layers of the Aingworth Glossary. How to know whether recognition is improving. Aingworth defines these plainly and does not adopt proprietary-sounding scoring language that belongs to other tools.
